3 Things to Avoid When Marketing Your Website

The online marketing process for your website involves doing a wide range of things to help increase traffic and in turn sales / revenues for your business. In this day and age it has become a difficult task as the competition is fierce with more websites are doing it and getting better at marketing in the process. We advise that you take caution when trying to out do your competitors. With that there are a few guidelines you should follow to not go overboard and get penalized for your efforts.
Do Not Use Software
If you have been involved with marketing your website, you've probably been pitched or advised to consider using software to help you in your efforts. The problem with doing so is that it automates the process so well that the development of your marketing is done to fast and as a result do not look natural. An example would be link exchanges, if your website uses a software to go out and get / build links you will get a lot of them very fast. You are almost surer to get penalized by the search engines as they will figure out that the links you are building are not natural referrals from other websites.
Stay Away From Link Farms
A Link farm is the term used for websites that have excessive links on their pages pointing to other websites. It is ok and normal for a website to list other resources for their visitors. When they have hundreds of different links to other sites that is a warning sign to stay away, our suggestion is to not link with any site that has more than thirty or so outbound links.
Don't Buy Links
To help speed up the process of manual link building or to get that high Page rank site to link to us, we sometimes consider going out and buying links from one of the many services we see. The problem is that the search engine knows about these sites as well. They then ban the site for selling links and in effect render their value useless. It is also speculated that you might get banned if your site ends up appearing on one of these service based link building offers. As a result you should stay away and not participate in such programs. If you want to buy links we suggest you do your research on a particular site and contact them directly asking for a link. Sometimes you can get one for free and other times you may be asked to pay for it. As long as the site doesn't publically offer links to the masses it's a safe route to take.
